Can Someone Really Hypnotize You?

There are three kinds of people when it comes to hypnosis:

1. The Believer - they realize that hypnosis is powerful and willingly go into trance. There are some tell tale signs for a "Believer" personality and this is the kind of person a stage hypnotist would pick out of the audience.

2. The Realist - they're unsure about hypnosis but are willing to give it a try. These people usually listen to a hypnotic induction and go under but don't realize what happened to them. It's up to someone else to point out what happened. They also usually only get hypnotized by experts. Not just anyone can hypnotize them.

3. The Cynic - they're the ones who think this just isn't possible. It's a sham and phone baloney that only applies to people who are simpletons and naive about the way the world works.

Have you ever driven home and not remembered exactly how you got there? Did you go the usual route? Or did you take a shortcut? Hypnosis doesn't have to be a deep somnabulistic trance where a deep state of unconscious rest is achieved. It can happen rather naturally during normal conversation, driving and routine and repetitive events.

Hypnosis isn't necessarily about trance (although you will eventually learn how to put yourself into one with the Hypnotic Laws). Hypnosis is simply an altered state of mind. And it's a an altered state you've been in many times without even realizing it.

When it happened you were aware, you were conscious and you were also highly focused or feeling a sense of deep rapport (if it was with a member of the opposite sex it's called 'magic') with someone.

In this altered state your mind is simply open to accepting new beliefs. It's a turning point in your life and it happened because of forces outside of your control. Now it's your choice now to see if you want to enter into this altered state again and make some meaningful changes.

I'll tell you a story about a smoker (he happened to be my father). As kids we begged and pleaded with him to just stop smoking but he'd never listen. My mother would also beg him to stop smoking but he just couldn't bring himself to do it. The only concession he made to us was to smoke outside the house so the smoke didn't bother any of us.

He smoked from the age of 21 to 46!

After a quarter century of heavy smoking one day everything changed for him. We were at dinner and the waiter and he struck up a nice conversation (in psychological terms this would be referred to as "establishing rapport").

When my father spoke to the waiter I could tell he was taken in by this man. They were about the same age, same ethnicity and they oddly even had the same body language at times.

This man - who we knew for all of 15 mins - was intently talking to my father about things and noticed the pack of cigarettes. He looked at him and I'll never forget what he said:

"Sir, I'm sorry for being so forward but I noticed the cigarettes. They're the same brand my father smoked. He died three years ago of lung cancer. Again, I am sorry for being so forward...but you have a lovely family here. Please don't make the same mistake that he made. You don't want your children to feel what I've felt these past three years".

Guess what happened then?

Guess who just decided to stop smoking?

Guess who on that day, in that very moment throw away cigarettes and gave up smoking for the rest of his life?

You see, my Dad entered into that altered state. He wasn't in a deep trance and he was aware of his surroundings. He was intently focused on what this man said, he felt a real kinship with him and this man's words for whatever reasons just had a powerful impact on him.

What If You Can Create These Altered States On Demand?

You see, he managed to kick a life long addiction that had plagued him for 25 years in a moment. My father had tried quitting in the past. He was never a callous man. He always took what we said seriously and tried to please us but failed every time.

And then some hypnotic stranger in a restaurant changed his life forever.

Hypnotic Inductions are designed to create these altered states on your terms. You can be hypnotized and you can enter into a deep restful state of mind where new beliefs can be born deep within your mind.

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring phenomenon. With the right knowledge and tools you can control it.

Truth About Hypnosis - Can You Hypnotize Anyone?

A common question for Hypnotists: "Can you hypnotize anyone?"
or "Can anybody be hypnotized?"
The simple answer is yes, but the more honest answer tends to surprise people.
The truth is, you are already hypnotized!
Just to be clear, let's start with some definitions.
Hypnosis: hyp·no·sis [hip-noh-sis] noun, "an artificially induced trance state resembling sleep, characterized by heightened susceptibility to suggestion."
(definition from Dictionary.com)
This is a pretty good basic definition. I might question the use of 'artificially induced', but it's not a bad start. Here's where it gets interesting.
We all experience 'heightened susceptibility to suggestion'
all the time, depending on the source of the suggestion. One can learn a great deal by examining the sources from which you accept suggestions with little or no question. Notice what groups, authors, political figures, teachings, etc. that seem correct or incorrect automatically... without reflection or pragmatic application. Remember, immediate presumption of correctness or incorrectness is a sure sign of being hypnotized. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but you definitely want to be aware of it.
It is very useful to make a point of recognizing what suggestions (from which sources) you resist and which ones you accept.
If you are a Catholic (which is to say you identify yourself as Catholic, or you see yourself as a Catholic), you develop a 'heightened susceptibility to suggestion' from all things Catholic, and likely the Pope as well. If you are a Buddhist, on the other hand, you might view all things Catholic with a certain amount of suspicion, but generally trust the statements of the Dalai Lama (now mentally review your inner reactions to the last paragraph... what did you resist?... what did you accept?... how exactly are you hypnotized, and is that hypnosis getting you where you want to go?).
Now, with this new perspective, let's take another look at our question: "Can you hypnotize anyone?"
The real question becomes a little more complex:
Can you recognize how someone is already hypnotized? Can you then make a statement that acknowledges their hypnosis or view of the world? Can you then add a suggestion that directs or redirects them in a useful way?
These refined questions lead us to a simple process of hypnosis.
3 simple steps to hypnotize anyone (including yourself)
Recognize how they (or you) are already hypnotized.Make a statement acknowledging that hypnosis.Say 'and...' or 'and that's why...' followed by your suggestion (whatever helpful direction you want send the client toward).
Here's an example many hypnotists have used: If a client comes in and says "I can't be hypnotized.", the hypnotist may respond with something like "That's right... you can't be hypnotized... and that's why you'll know when you accept all these suggestions completely, it is because you choose to accept them completely, don't you."
In this scenario, the client gets to keep their beliefs, and the hypnotist gets to gently take control and guide the client in a more useful direction that is supportive of the client's goals.
It is useful to note that many hypnotists are also 'life coaches', and they might also lead guided meditations. This gives the hypnotist other options for clients that don't want to be hypnotized. The tools and concepts of hypnosis still apply, but they are used in a context with which the client is comfortable.
We'll end with a cautionary note: Many people like the idea of hypnotizing someone else as a power trip. Statements like "I can make people do things against their will!",
"I can control the minds of others!", and other such nonsense are signs of an egotistical would-be manipulator pretending to be a sincere hypnotist.
The best long-term practice for hypnotizing others is learning and applying self-hypnosis. When you become a skillful leader of yourself, you will naturally become a leader of others as well. Practicing self-hypnosis will also help you to recognize your desire for control of others, and gradually remove it to reveal your desire for the well-being of others. This is the mark of a sincere hypnotist. Once you have learned to gently and firmly guide yourself, you will automatically do the same for your clients.
Godspeed on your journey!

How to Hypnotize Someone in Five Seconds

Delivering strong suggestions through metaphors or stories is one of the oldest and most popular forms of hypnosis that can be seen used just about everywhere today. If you have every listened to and effective public speaker of preacher delivering their sermon you have been on the receiving end of Ericksonian hypnosis.

An effective speaker will usually begin their talk with a joke, or interesting story pertaining to the target topic which delivers a message. A prime example of this would be the age old story of "The Boy who Cried Wolf". This is a story of a shepherd boy who was guarding his flocks of sheep. Several times during one specific evening he shouted, "Wolf, Wolf!". People ran to his assistance only to find that there was no wolf and the boy was just lying to get attention. Later on in the evening an actual wolf did begin attacking the flock and when the boy yelled "Wolf, Wolf!", the villagers did not run to his assistance thinking that we was just lying again and the boy perished.

This is a classic form of Ericksonian hypnosis that can be told to a child that has a problem with lying. Rather than being told to stop lying directly which would make the child shut off mentally, this story is something that the child can relate to. By relating to the young shepherd boys continual lying, the child will realize that if he continues in this manner that it will eventually get him in trouble. This story is a wonderful covert way to have the child accept suggestion to be honest in the future if he wants people to believe him.

In addition to stories, entertaining jokes with a morale and even Fairly Tales one of the most common and effectively used methods of hypnosis can be seen in the way of parables. Many religious groups and books utilize parables to get their readers to follow positive suggestion or conform with little to no resistance. Therefore the authors of these parables could be seen as some of the earliest practitioners of Ericksonian hypnosis.

Try it the next time your child or someone you know requires assistance in the way of positive suggestion. Think about the desired end result or goal and simply develop a story line incorporating fictitious characters to attain this goal as a result of the story, challenge or struggle. You may possibly even develop an entertaining joke or anecdote which can have the same result.

Here's one of my favorite ones that I have used throughout the years at the beginning of many church sermons and even sales presentations. "There was once a busy ant hill in the woods, just outside the green of a community golf course. One day there was a new gopher on the course that recklessly hit his ball which landed right on the top, center of the anthill. The ants began scurrying around frantically not knowing what was happening. Of course in the game of golf, the ball must be played wherever it lands so the golfer took aim at his ball, swung and missed it completely.

As a result of this swing he killed half of the ants on the hill but the ball remained right in the middle of it. The golfer swung again and once again missed killing all of the ants but two. As the golfer began his swing for a third time, one ant looked at the other and said, "brother if we're going to save ourselves, we'd better get on the ball!."

This amusing story always brought a smile to many of the faces in the congregation however they were also able to relate to the message that they had better get on the ball as well. It was delivered in a way that was accepted and had them open-minded towards my talk on the topic. If I had simply started my talk by telling the audience that they had better get on the ball, I would have been giving my talk to a closed minded, even rebellious audience.

This is your formula of hypnotizing anyone in five seconds. Just decide on your desired message and begin telling an amusing story or metaphor as a way to deliver it.

Happy story telling.

How To Do Self Hypnosis - Can You Hypnotize Yourself?

One of the first and central points about understanding how to do self hypnosis and learning how to hypnotize yourself is that almost any conscious human being can learn to use at least the most basic elements of self hypnosis and subsequently experience the benefits of it.

To a large extent, many of the problems that people cope with in their daily lives are sustained simply because of their mental attitude towards the problem itself. If you're lacking confidence and are disadvantaged by negative self beliefs, continually and habitually telling yourself that you lack confidence and have no positive self belief will not improve your outlook. If you have a weight problem and want to get slimmer, continually and habitually telling yourself that you have a strong desire to consume sweet and junk food and that attempting to change this for the better would be monumentally difficult, would be effectively guaranteed to maintain the desire to overeat.

Or perhaps you had a fear of heights, dogs, dentists, flying or whatever. By sustaining the phobic reaction through constant repetition of it in your conscious mind you will ensure that the phobia continues to play a large and limiting role in your life.

It might have been noticed that the words "continual", "habitual" and "constant" featured fairly distinctly in the paragraphs above. If you continually and habitually tell yourself something, whether positive or negative and either by habit or design, you are in fact practicing - at a very basic level - self hypnosis.

Self hypnosis - all hypnosis is ultimately self hypnosis - is mostly about tapping into and drawing upon the power of the subconscious mind. The subconscious could be compared to an unimaginably powerful computer which has installed within it the "program" of the universe itself. All human beings who are fundamentally alive have a subconscious mind, and this means that every person, however apparently foolish, self-centered, unhappy or negative minded they may seem to be has access - through the subconscious - to this universal "program" of boundless ability and wisdom.

The methods or techniques involved in using self hypnosis to access and harness the power of the subconscious are simple - like most effective methods - and actually quite "logical".

The power of the subconscious is at all times available, but is hindered or inhibited by the "firewall" of the critical, doubting and limiting conscious mind. It's therefore necessary to break or penetrate the firewall. Imagine the firewall as an obstacle or door that has to be knocked on repeatedly before you eventually get through. (Sceptics and "rationalists" who try to minimize the power and potential of the mind by claiming that there is nothing behind the door are merely trapped in the mental web of their own negativity.)

So what exactly is involved in this persistent knocking on the door of the subconscious? It involves what you already intuitively know it to involve, ie using, or training, your conscious mind to habitually and continually impress upon your subconscious whatever it is that makes up the feeling and mental image of your success in whatever it may be that you're seeking to achieve.

In other words, it basically involves utilizing the power of self-suggestion and visualization while being physically and mentally relaxed.

Let's say that you were experiencing, for example, problems relating to lack of personal confidence. You would start to deal with this by setting aside one or better still two daily periods of around 10 minutes each, in which you would first sit or lie down comfortably in privacy and quiet, close your eyes and begin to breathe fairly slowly, deeply and regularly. When you start to become physically relaxed and sense your consciousness turning inward, fill your mind with a mental image of yourself as you desire to be, confident, relaxed and self assured, enjoying the company of friends and acquaintances and seeing them enjoying yours. And not only "seeing" or visualizing this, but emotionally feeling it too.

Maintain this and then begin to repeat to yourself - either mentally or verbally, bearing in mind that verbally would have more "impact" - a positive affirmation along the lines of "I'm relaxed, confident and attractive" around 20 times, all the while maintaining your relaxed state and visualization. After a few more minutes, let it all fade away and allow yourself to return to normal consciousness.

If you keep this up, at least once a day or more preferably twice, you'll soon begin to experience positive change in your inner emotional and psychological landscape. You'll find yourself becoming less self conscious and more extroverted, and you may also begin to encounter more in the way of opportunities for relationships, socializing and so on beginning to occur in ways that wouldn't have happened previously. In other words, the knocking on the door of your subconscious will have been answered, and not only will you know it, you'll also feel it.
