How To Do Self Hypnosis - Can You Hypnotize Yourself?

One of the first and central points about understanding how to do self hypnosis and learning how to hypnotize yourself is that almost any conscious human being can learn to use at least the most basic elements of self hypnosis and subsequently experience the benefits of it.

To a large extent, many of the problems that people cope with in their daily lives are sustained simply because of their mental attitude towards the problem itself. If you're lacking confidence and are disadvantaged by negative self beliefs, continually and habitually telling yourself that you lack confidence and have no positive self belief will not improve your outlook. If you have a weight problem and want to get slimmer, continually and habitually telling yourself that you have a strong desire to consume sweet and junk food and that attempting to change this for the better would be monumentally difficult, would be effectively guaranteed to maintain the desire to overeat.

Or perhaps you had a fear of heights, dogs, dentists, flying or whatever. By sustaining the phobic reaction through constant repetition of it in your conscious mind you will ensure that the phobia continues to play a large and limiting role in your life.

It might have been noticed that the words "continual", "habitual" and "constant" featured fairly distinctly in the paragraphs above. If you continually and habitually tell yourself something, whether positive or negative and either by habit or design, you are in fact practicing - at a very basic level - self hypnosis.

Self hypnosis - all hypnosis is ultimately self hypnosis - is mostly about tapping into and drawing upon the power of the subconscious mind. The subconscious could be compared to an unimaginably powerful computer which has installed within it the "program" of the universe itself. All human beings who are fundamentally alive have a subconscious mind, and this means that every person, however apparently foolish, self-centered, unhappy or negative minded they may seem to be has access - through the subconscious - to this universal "program" of boundless ability and wisdom.

The methods or techniques involved in using self hypnosis to access and harness the power of the subconscious are simple - like most effective methods - and actually quite "logical".

The power of the subconscious is at all times available, but is hindered or inhibited by the "firewall" of the critical, doubting and limiting conscious mind. It's therefore necessary to break or penetrate the firewall. Imagine the firewall as an obstacle or door that has to be knocked on repeatedly before you eventually get through. (Sceptics and "rationalists" who try to minimize the power and potential of the mind by claiming that there is nothing behind the door are merely trapped in the mental web of their own negativity.)

So what exactly is involved in this persistent knocking on the door of the subconscious? It involves what you already intuitively know it to involve, ie using, or training, your conscious mind to habitually and continually impress upon your subconscious whatever it is that makes up the feeling and mental image of your success in whatever it may be that you're seeking to achieve.

In other words, it basically involves utilizing the power of self-suggestion and visualization while being physically and mentally relaxed.

Let's say that you were experiencing, for example, problems relating to lack of personal confidence. You would start to deal with this by setting aside one or better still two daily periods of around 10 minutes each, in which you would first sit or lie down comfortably in privacy and quiet, close your eyes and begin to breathe fairly slowly, deeply and regularly. When you start to become physically relaxed and sense your consciousness turning inward, fill your mind with a mental image of yourself as you desire to be, confident, relaxed and self assured, enjoying the company of friends and acquaintances and seeing them enjoying yours. And not only "seeing" or visualizing this, but emotionally feeling it too.

Maintain this and then begin to repeat to yourself - either mentally or verbally, bearing in mind that verbally would have more "impact" - a positive affirmation along the lines of "I'm relaxed, confident and attractive" around 20 times, all the while maintaining your relaxed state and visualization. After a few more minutes, let it all fade away and allow yourself to return to normal consciousness.

If you keep this up, at least once a day or more preferably twice, you'll soon begin to experience positive change in your inner emotional and psychological landscape. You'll find yourself becoming less self conscious and more extroverted, and you may also begin to encounter more in the way of opportunities for relationships, socializing and so on beginning to occur in ways that wouldn't have happened previously. In other words, the knocking on the door of your subconscious will have been answered, and not only will you know it, you'll also feel it.
