Covert hypnosis is the subtle influencing of a subject's mind through normal conversation without his becoming aware of being hypnotized. This particular technique communicates with a person's unconscious mind and uses the subject's imagination to open him up for suggestion. The defining features of covert Hypnosis are the subject's participation in the hypnosis without his knowledge, and using the techniques of rapport and imagination to bring about a change in the participant's behaviour or actions so subtly that he believes the result was of his own volition.
The key differentiator between covert hypnosis and traditional hypnosis is that the subject is unaware of hypnosis being practiced on him and reaches the state of hypnosis through no conscious effort. The hypnotist applies a range of covert techniques to influence the person and the entire phenomenon is so subtle that hypnosis is accomplished and the end result achieved without the knowledge of the subject.
While we traditionally associate hypnosis with the image of the subject lying down with his eyes closed and in a trance, covert hypnosis induces a different kind of a trance, where the subject's eyes are open. In covert hypnosis, the subject's mind is primed for receiving direction by suppression of the critical or analytical mind. The subject's imagination is activated and engaged through the use of certain trigger words like "Imagine" or "What if", subtly followed by behaviour altering commands and suggestions, all of which happens while the subject's eyes are open and while he is standing up or sitting down. The trance is induced so subtly that the subject is completely unaware of what is occurring.
An essential technique used in covert hypnosis is the building of a rapport which wins the hypnotizer the attention and trust of the subject. Hypnotists create a link or connection to the subconscious of the subject through several methods, the most popular of which is mirroring. The hypnotist subtly and naturally mimics the actions and gestures of the subject, creating a subconscious tie and gaining the subject's confidence and cooperation which they then influence during the further stages of the hypnosis.
While this kind of hypnosis does not have the closed eyes and relaxed subject of traditional hypnosis, you can look out for other signals to identify when your subject is in the hypnotic state. Common signs include an absence of critical thought, active listening and sympathetic behavior. When you see the subject displaying behavior suggested by you or believing he has thought up an idea which was influenced by you, you will know you have successfully achieved covert hypnosis.
The covert hypnosis is totally different from traditional hypnosis techniques because of its unique way to convince the subject. Instead of using common hypnotic methods, the covert hypnosis is all about communicating with the subject. The hypnotist is required to be social skilled and a good conversationalist. This technique makes the subject feel like he is totally aware of his surroundings and making social conversation while the hypnotist tries to export his ideas through the conversation. There are numerous teaching modules available in the internet and many of them are totally free. You can easily collect them to practice and learn the art of covert hypnosis.
