"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." -Leonardo Da Vinci
The personal development industry typically makes changing your life much more complicated than it needs to be.
There are a variety of methods of change work out there... not only changing habits, but also changing attitudes, beliefs, and even your own identity or self-image... who you perceive yourself to be.
One of my favorite methods of change is hypnosis. There are many methods of hypnosis, and there are many hypnotic effects that can be used for change (and any method you can get to work for you is a good method). The most obvious, most common, and most natural method, however, is repetition. Many people are on a quest for a book, meditation, video, or therapist that will give them the amazing one-shot fix of their dreams. Unfortunately, this is a very haphazard method. Again, the much more reliable method is repetition.
Another proponent of repetition for change, and perhaps the best known personal development genius of the 20th Century was Napoleon Hill... the best selling author of Think and Grow Rich. He was also a fan of hypnosis. In his book, the fourth chapter is all about auto-suggestion, which is just another way of describing self-hypnosis. He also has a famous quote regarding repetition:
"Any idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought." -Napoleon Hill
Before I say what I'm about to say, I want to let you know that there are great hypnotists out there, and there are other powerful practitioners of other methods of change-work. Many of them can get you results quickly. A few can even get you results in a single session. The vast majority, however, are not able to do this.
Once again, the only guaranteed method of hypnotic change is repetition.
One of the great things about it, though, is you do not need anyone else to do it. You can set up your own experiment for repetition with self-hypnosis just by following the simple steps in this article.
The best way to do this is to use a process that I call the 21 day protocol.
What the heck is the 21 day protocol?
It is the method that you can completely transform a certain aspect of your life in the next 21 days or less.
What you have to do right now:
Take a few deep breaths to relax deeply.Decide on 1 thing you would like to change about yourself or your results in the world in the next 21 days (do your best to stay relaxed and focus in on what would truly be satisfying to you). When you are certain you have a goal you are ready to commit to, write it down.Put it in a place where you will see it every day (preferably multiple times). You can make it your desktop background, your screensaver, you can tape it up above your bed, you can tape it up somewhere in your car, etc.Schedule it out on your calendar (whether it's a physical calendar, outlook calendar, Google calendar, etc.) for the 21 days with today as Day One.Do your practice for Day One... which is relaxed visualization of what you will see, hear, and feel now that you have achieved your goal. Take at least 5 minutes (preferably 20 to 30 minutes) to really get acquainted with all the changes you like about your life now that you have achieved your goal. Continue to relax and visualize all your favorite things about your new life for the remainder of your time. Now mark it off on your calendar (or in some other way journal or note that you completed your practice for the day). Congratulations, you have completed your practice for Day One!Now continue to follow through by repeating steps 6 and 7 for Day Two through Day Twenty-OneThat's it! If you followed along with the steps, you've already done the hard part of getting started. If you didn't follow along, go ahead and take a few minutes to get started right now.
As you go about your day-to-day life, you will also want to:
Be alert for new opportunities (or opportunities that you may not have noticed before).Do your best to follow what seems like the most likely path to your goal until a better, faster, or more effective path presents itself.Gently coach and encourage yourself the whole way through. If you make a mistake or miss a day, tell yourself this or something similar: "That's ok. This happens. Every time I come back to this it gets easier and easier and I get better and better at it."Most people seem to do better when the practice at the same time each day, or close to same time.
It might not be easy to stick with this for 21 days... but you can definitely do it. It won't be easy finding a simpler solution than this. I encourage you to recognize that the next 21 days are going to pass one way or the other. The way I see it, you might as well let them be a part of your transformation.
Who will you be at the end of the next 21 days?
Will you be the person you want to be?
Will you be a person well on their way to becoming the person you want to be?
Or will you be a person who feels very disappointed that they didn't follow the simplest effective (and free) process for personal development on the planet.
"If you want to do the many things that most people can't do, simply do the few things that most people won't do!" -Frank Kern
I don't think you can make it any simpler than that.
Godspeed on your journey!
